World Environment Day is marked on the 5th June and World Oceans Day celebrated on the 8th June and both are very important to us here at Euro-Divers Maldives.
The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is ‘Biodiversity’ and since we are based amidst one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet we not only appreciate how very special the coral reefs of the Maldives are but strive to work in sustainable ways that will ensure future generations can experience the huge variety of life that we see on the reefs today. Seeing turtles, sharks, rays, more species of fish that you could possibly remember, and a whole host of small stuff too, is a daily occurrence for our divers and snorkelers – biodiversity is what the Maldives does very well indeed with an estimated 2000+ species!
World Oceans Day 2020 has the mission of pushing for 30% of the oceans to be protected by 2030 and therefore providing safe havens for marine life. The Maldives first designated 10 Marine Protected Areas in 1995 to safeguard against over exploitation of the reefs, that number has risen to 42 and includes famous whale shark and manta aggregation sites plus many world-renowned dive sites.
Diving in the Maldives will deliver spectacular encounters with diverse marine life on reefs that are among the most important ecosystems in the world, our teams at Euro-Divers Maldives look forward to welcoming you back to share the joy of the nature on the reefs here as soon as we can. In the meantime, take a nature quiz on the World Environment Day site and sign a petition on the World Oceans Day.
