If you love scuba diving and snorkelling, you’ve probably got a list of must-see marine creatures and manta rays are bound to appear near the top!
Here in the Maldives, our teams at Euro-Divers are in the very fortunate position of being able to encounter these gentle giants of the ocean time and time again – it’s one of the best places in the world to see them.
Although sightings in the Maldives are common and they enjoy a protected status, mantas are vulnerable and need our help. Outside of the diving world, many people will never have seen a manta ray and even less likely to know about the threats they are facing; September’s World Manta Day seeks to change that. Manta Trust, a charity that coordinates global research and conservation efforts around mantas and their habitats, hopes this special day will be a powerful tool in highlighting their plight and it is hoped that this will go a long way towards ensuring these magnificent creatures are still around for future generations of divers to admire.
There’s nothing quite as magical as your first ever sighting of a manta ray in the ocean, they’re big, graceful and curious creatures that seem to glide effortlessly through the water. Coming face to face with them while they hover
over cleaning stations or perform elaborate barrel rolls to feed on plankton is something you won’t forget in a hurry, it’s an incredible experience and one we’d love to share with you!
