the Maldives for the Oceans clean up event

In a nation comprised of 99% ocean, it’s not surprising that the Euro-Divers Maldives team enthusiastically jumped in to take part in the Maldives for the Oceans clean up event on Saturday 17th June. This nationwide event to celebrate World Oceans Month was organised in collaboration with Parley Maldives, Maldives Association of Tourism Industry and Ministry of Education and was a huge success.

The numbers add up

The Euro-Divers Maldives dive centres signed the Ocean Pledge, an iniative aimed at raising awareness about marine life and promoting and preserving biodiversitry in the ocean. In total, across our dive centers in the Maldives, an astonishing 367 kg of debris was collectd, this comprised of about 70% plastics and 30% fishing industry material, the majority of the debris was washed up by ocean currents.

All recyclable plastics were sorted after the event and put into jumbo bags provided by Parley Maldives and sent to Malé for processing. Debris intercepted by Parley in this way is prevented from reentering the oceans and harming reefs and marine life.

Here’s a snapshot of the fantastic achievements of our teams across the Maldives:
