When scuba divers choose a destination for their next diving holiday, perfect beaches and luxurious accommodation don’t usually feature very highly on the list of important things to consider – it’s all about the diving! With so many incredible places in the world to dive it can be hard to know where to begin when deciding where to go and the best place to start is to ask yourself what you hope to see. Most destinations are renowned for either big fish or critters for macro photography.
Those in search of adrenalin-pumping dives with big fish often have to resign themselves to the fact that they will often be jumping into strong currents, often into the blue with a high chance of seeing nothing at all but always with a glimmer of hope that this will be THE ONE with a shark and ray frenzy happening around them.

Then there are the divers who prefer a gentler pace – so gentle that they like to painstakingly search the reef in detail to find all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures, often camouflaged and unnoticed by those merrily fin kicking their way along the reef!
If you’re a diver who loves the thrill of diving with sharks and rays, but also loves to discover the small critters for a spot of macro photography, the Maldives is the destination for you. With everything from whale sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean, and manta rays to frogfish and nudibranchs, divers often don’t know where to look first.

Unlike some other destinations, if you go in search of sharks and they elude you, you won’t be left with nothing – the reefs are amazing and you can either admire the colourful corals and stunning topography or tune in to the small stuff and put a tick in the macro box instead.
The Maldives really does have it all, even the perfect beaches and luxurious accommodation!
